Oberto, Conte de San Bonifacio was Verdi's first opera,  receiving its premiere at La Scala, Milan, on 17 November 1839,   it having been virtually complete by 1836. However its genesis probably began under the name Rocester, in 1834.   Though the work of a 23 year old who  had failed his entrance exam to the Milan Conservatoire two years earlier,  the work is of substantial importance.
