Luisa Miller was composed  during the second half of 1849. It is said to be a turning point in Verdi's operatic style,  with much simpler, more lyrical phrasing,  and led to the great trio of Rigoletto, La Traviata and  Il Trovatore.  It was first performed  on December 8, 1849, and after a period of relative neglect has established itself as among Verdi's finest pre-Rigoletto works.
