Janacek began composition in the autumn of 1922,  and after a few pauses, completed the opera in March 1923. The premiere  took place in Brno on 6 November 1924. It became very popular in Czechoslovakia (as it was then)  and found a wide audience in Europe from the early 1950s. It is now accalimed as among Jancek's finest operas.

This recording was made in the Sofiensaal, VIenna in March 1981.
