This item appears as new throughout except as mentioned above. Acquired by us in 2007 as part of a large collection but never played since.

One of Strauss' masterpieces,   this tragicomedy had a chequered start in life. The librettist being Jewish, and all entertainment with any Jewish content being banned in Nazi Germany,  Strauss took a greate risk in completing the work, and it received its premiere,  amazingly with the personal consent of Hitler,  in Dresden in 1935,  following which (to cut a long story short) it was banned until 1945.  It received its first postwar  German performance a year later (again in Dresden) and it is this production that has endured and on which this first recording is based.
